This represents a best case scenerio for both the Tigers and Justin Verlander. Not all of the details are in yet but there is the frame work of a 5 year extension, through Verlander’s year 37 season and he will go into the extension as the highest annual salaried pitcher in baseball.
Verlander was unable to become the first $200MM pitcher like he wanted to but he beat out every other pitcher to the $28MM per year level, something his competitiveness wanted.
This is a good deal for the Tigers as Verlander is on his way to the Hall of Fame, as a Tiger and only a Tiger. He will pitch his entire career in Detroit but won’t be tying up money for the team until he is 43 like Albert Pujols is going to be doing to the Angles.
