Well, it’s been a long 2 months plus but the Tigers are back in first place thanks to the White Sox playing some awful baseball and the Tigers playing above average.
The Velveteen Rabbit and I picked our “Rick Porcello Blow Up Inning” before the game and he won by picking the 3rd (I went with the 4th) and Mr. Jim Leyland, despite all the criticism, pulled his ineffective pitcher and replaced him with Luis Marte, Al Albuquerque, Joaqin Benoit and Jose Valverde which was the right decisions and led to the win.
Credit to Leyland for letting Fister throw a complete game on Saturday, Sanchez on Tuesday and Verlander going 8 on Monday. This let the bull pen rest and allowed for this to happen.
With out those decisions and strong performances the Tigers could have been stuck with the Tigers trying to come back and hold the Royals by using Luke Putkonen, Phil Coke, Darin Downs and Jhonny Peralta.
It isn’t going to be often that you see praise for a manager all of us here at MCST want to see gone but he deserves credit for those moves that allowed last night’s “Kitchen Sink” bull pen to happen and for using the pen at the right time and the right way.
And it would be a disservice to not mention Andy Dirks and the take out slide at second base that let *barf* Don Kelly to score. That slide was reminiscent of the Marcus Thames slide into Tadahito Iguchi of the White Sox in late July of 2006 as it also allowed the winning run to score and was in the heat of a tight division race.
And let us be thankful that despite leaving 14 runners on base the Indians were still able to beat the lowly White Sox, who are in a bit of a tailspin at the moment and have to face the red hot Tampa Rays who are fighting for their playoff lives…Tigers are looking good in the drivers seat right now…magic number is 7
